A genogram records more than who is related to whom. It shows how a family works: marriages and divorces, deaths and losses, illness and substance use, and the emotional quality of each relationship across at least three generations. GenogramCraft gives you those conventions directly instead of making you improvise with shapes in a drawing app.
- Relational building. Select a person and add a partner, son, daughter, parents, siblings or twins; lines connect themselves.
- Every standard symbol. Deaths, pregnancies, miscarriages, stillbirths, adoption, foster care, sexual orientation, gender identity and four kinds of health or substance shading.
- Twelve emotional relationship lines, from close and fused to conflictual, cutoff and abuse, drawn to the person they point at.

Two optional AI helpers
Draft from a description. Type or paste a few sentences from your intake notes (“her parents divorced in 2001; her brother drinks heavily”) and get a first-draft chart to correct. Use roles or first names only.
Pattern notes. Ask for neutral observations about repeated patterns (cutoffs, triangles, illness or conflict across generations) plus open questions to explore in session. Only de-identified structure is sent: codes like “P3”, never names, dates or notes.

Is this genogram maker free?
Yes. Every symbol, template, export format and the de-identification options are free, with no account and no watermark. The two AI helpers are free too, with a fair-use limit per hour.
Where are my genograms stored?
In your own browser (localStorage) on the device you are using. Nothing you draw is sent to a server. If you clear your browser data or switch devices, export a JSON file first so you can reopen the chart later.
Is GenogramCraft HIPAA compliant?
HIPAA applies to how covered entities handle protected health information. Because charts never leave your device, GenogramCraft does not receive, store or transmit client data, so there is no business associate relationship to sign. You remain responsible for the device, your exports, and following your agency’s record policies. For shared or printed copies, use the de-identified export (initials or codes, ages instead of dates).
Which symbol conventions does it follow?
The standard conventions from McGoldrick, Gerson and Petry’s Genograms: Assessment and Treatment (the most widely taught reference): squares for males, circles for females, a double outline for the index person, an X for deaths, slashes for separation and divorce, and dashed or dotted lines for cohabitation, adoption and foster care.
Can I export a genogram to Word or Google Docs?
Export PNG for pasting into Word, Google Docs or a slide; export SVG if you need sharp lines at any size; or use PDF / Print for a paper copy. The optional symbol key is added automatically, listing only the symbols your chart uses.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. Drag symbols with a finger, pinch to zoom and drag the background to pan. A laptop is more comfortable for large family systems, but a tablet works well in session.
